A KLT container, an R-KLT container or any other plastic box – at first glance, they hardly seem any different. After all, it is really just a box.


But anyone who has to move, lift or position containers on a daily basis knows that size, weight, geometry and the application place very different demands on the container and on how it is handled.


It is only on closer inspection that it becomes clear why the right lifting attachment is crucial for ergonomics, process reliability and efficient workflows.


What Are Container Grippers?

Container grippers are technical lifting attachments designed to safely pick up, lift and position a wide range of containers. Depending on the container design and the specific requirements, they may grip the container at its rim or at specially designed lifting points.


The gripper itself is attached to a lifting device, such as an electronic rope balancer. This allows even heavy or unwieldy containers to be moved ergonomically and precisely.


Container grippers can be used in virtually every industry. Wherever products or materials are supplied, transported, removed or transferred in containers, they can be used – whether for standardised KLT and R-KLT containers, plastic or metal containers, or customer-specific load carriers.



What Types of Containers Can Be Handled?

The range of containers used in production and logistics is extensive. These include standardised KLT and R-KLT containers, Euro containers, plastic boxes and metal containers. Special load carriers and customer-specific containers are also part of everyday operations.


The containers differ not only in size and weight. Their shape, material, rim geometry, centre of gravity and the way in which they can be picked up also play a decisive role.


While standardised containers can often be safely handled using proven gripping solutions, special containers or specific requirements frequently call for a customised solution.


Why Are Container Grippers Used?

Containers are an integral part of production and logistics. They transport components, materials and products from one stage of a process to the next and often have to be moved, lifted and positioned precisely.


What can still be done effortlessly by hand with a single container can quickly become physically demanding when weights increase, gripping positions are awkward or movements have to be repeated frequently. This is where container grippers come into their own.


They take the weight of the container and allow it to be moved with minimal physical effort. Combined with a suitable lifting device, such as an electronic rope balancer, containers can be handled ergonomically, safely and precisely.


It is not just about reducing the physical effort involved. A well-matched system can also simplify workflows, enable repeatable movements and help ensure that containers and their contents are moved safely and with care.


What Requirements Must a Container Gripper Meet?

Above all, a container gripper must safely pick up the container and hold it securely throughout the entire movement. At the same time, the container should be handled as gently as possible – especially when it is carrying sensitive components or products.


The handling process itself is also important. The gripper should be easy and intuitive to operate and support the operator’s movements rather than creating additional steps.


Depending on the application, additional requirements may apply: different container weights, varying container sizes, unusual centres of gravity or restricted space can all influence the design of the gripper.


The key consideration is therefore not simply whether a container can be gripped, but how safely, ergonomically and reliably the entire handling process can be carried out.



Is There a Suitable Gripper for Every Container?

Not every container is the same – and therefore not every container gripper is suitable for every application.


For many common container types, proven gripping solutions are already available. This offers a decisive advantage: the design has been tried and tested and can be used again for comparable applications.


In practice, however, we also encounter containers that deviate from the usual standards. Special dimensions, unusual geometries, atypical loads or individual requirements for the gripping process may call for a different solution.


In such cases, the container itself becomes the starting point for the design. Together with the customer, a lifting attachment is then developed that is precisely tailored to the specific container and the intended workflow.

Ultimately, the container should not have to be adapted to the gripper – the gripper should be adapted to the task.


How Does a Container Gripper Become the Right Solution?

The container is the starting point – but knowing its dimensions alone is not enough to design the right gripper.


What load needs to be moved? Where is the centre of gravity? How is the container picked up and set down? How frequently is it moved, and how much freedom of movement is available at the workstation? The type of operation and the requirements of the workflow also play a role.


These factors determine the appropriate gripping principle. Depending on the container and the application, gripping may take place at the container rim, at existing lifting points or at other suitable locations.


The interaction with the lifting device used must also be taken into account. In combination with an electronic rope balancer, the container gripper can be designed so that the load can be moved not only safely, but also smoothly and precisely.


This is how a suitable solution for the specific workstation is developed step by step from the container and its individual requirements.


What If Different Containers Need to Be Handled?

In many applications, handling is not limited to a single container type. Depending on the production process, different container sizes may need to be moved – or even several containers at the same time.


Suitable solutions can also be developed for these requirements. For example, a gripper can be designed to pick up two containers simultaneously. With the appropriate gripping concept, different container sizes can also be handled with a single gripper.


This can simplify workflows, eliminate unnecessary gripper changes and make multiple grippers unnecessary – saving both time and costs. The most suitable solution always depends on the containers, their weight and the requirements of the specific handling process.


The same principle applies here: the gripper should not dictate the workflow – the task should determine how the gripper is designed.

Safe and ergonomic container handling involves more than might be apparent at first glance: the right gripping point, the appropriate gripping principle, the weight, the geometry and, of course, the entire workflow.
